which is actually why she's in the kitchen-cave area, which is connected directly to the outside for ventilation. they have...cooking things. nanami even knows the names of some of these things. and some supplies that hinata and the others have gotten, since nanami had mostly only gotten pre-made things because, again: cooking mama doesn't prepare you to actually cook.
however, standing in the kitchen-cave and staring at everything does not apparently unlock a real-life cooking tutorial. luckily she's immediately distracted by...

hinata's dragon hatched two days ago, and if nanami hadn't been their personal npc (though it feels wrong to think of her as a literal npc) hinata isn't sure what he'd do. he's never had to raise a dragon before-- or anything else, for that matter? does he look like a teen dad, no. no he does not.
but the green and brown thing is the size of a small puppy, and just as energetic. hinata is just heading to the kitchen to find the little thing a snack. okay, that's a lie, hinata's heading there because he figures someone should look into making a meal for the class, and while he's hardly a chef (where are you, hanamura, save us) he figures he can put something simple together.
he pauses in the doorway (cave-way?) with his dragon in his arms. nanami don't let your dragon ]
... Need some help? [ even if she doesn't, hinata sets the dragon on the floor next to him as he tries to help scoop up the beans.
his dragon is casually stealing a couple, whether to play with or eat. guess he's going to name him azuki, because he sure is a bean thief. too bad hinata is an awful person and takes the beans away from azuki with a gentle "no" tap on the dragon's nose. swiper no swiping. ]
We can wash them, it should be fine. What were you planning to cook?

the real world - or whatever this is - happens to be pretty disappointing, really. nanami sighs and sets landia fully down so she can use both of her own hands to scoop up the beans.
landia uses her newfound freedom to chirrup at azuki and stumble in his general direction. at least it's not making the mess worse this time... ]

hinata pauses for a moment. of course nanami doesn't know what she's cooking. why did he think she would. maybe because he figured in the month she's been here she would have learned to take care of herself, living alone.
azuki makes a rumbly noise at landia and sweeps his tail across the floor much like a dog would wag it's tail. he's a bit smaller than nanami's dragon, and hinata wonders what size they'll be when full-grown. which is a. horrifying thought, because holy shit dragons can get big. the biggest pet he's ever raised was a hermit crab, in elementary school. ]
Just beans by themselves? Well, we can figure something out with beans. Do you have any recipe books?
[ he's guessing no. but a recipe book would be like a uh. recipe quest for her?? if she doesn't have any, he can... buy her one, maybe. ]

Not for rinsing them off. Beans are supposed to be washed anyway, and we have to make sure there's no dirt or debris. [ can hinata cook beans. maybe. maybe not. maybe he's just guessing using basic cooking skills. ] Since we want the beans today, we should boil them. Otherwise we could have soaked them overnight to soften them before cooking. Then I... think you rinse them again before actually cooking them. Do we have a saucepan?

[ we have. pans. and a stove we have to stoke with fire ourselves...but nanami does not know the special names of any of these pans. they aren't fancy? they are pans and pots? presumably some of them are better for certain things than others? she just kind of accepted what was already here???? hanamura should clearly show up and take over because nanami had no idea what she was doing. this is why she lived on takeout for like, an entire month. ]
If it's boiling water...I can do that, I think. [ encouraging. she scoops up more of the beans into the container, working in tandem with hinata.
landia squeaks in outrage as she gets batted at, and nanami looks over at the hatchlings again, emptying her next handful before gently reaching out to separate them. ]
Now, now...you have to play nice, you know? It's a co-op game, and we're in a party...friendly fire isn't allowed.
well now I know how to cook beans so
[ once all the beans are back in the container, he'll look for a pot that's deep enough to hold enough beans for five teens, and put it on the stove. he'll... light the stove himself, since he's not sure he trusts nanami with fire. but leave the actual boiling part to her. ]
They'll have to soak for an hour after boiling for a few minutes, then they can be cooked. Otherwise they'll be hard. [ he thinks. save us, hanamura whoever the fuck you are, you're our only ho.
azuki gives a dramatic wine at being scolded, and sulkily flops himself on the ground. wherever did he get such a flair for the dramatic? but he won't bat landia again... probably... ]
So, what do we want to have with the beans? Rice? Something more complicated? [ he's not sure either of them are ready to make anything more complex than beans and rice. maybe put butter on bread. ]

hinata may have to handle that part himself. or they can buy something premade from a restaurant to augment what they're doing here.
landia is way less overdramatic about being scolded, and merely takes the warning in stride. after watching azuki to see if he will do anything else interesting she will settle down nearby, fluffing up her wings and cozying in to nap. ]

[ is it time for a fetch quest. how intense is this cooking quest going to be. hinata doesn't know, because he doesn't think in terms of quests. since they'll have an hour to kill once the bean water has boiled, they can both go on a fun shopping trip if they need to.
